Bottom line: you want a domain that is not only short but also meaningful.

In addition to the Domain Name itself, the extension of the Domain is critical. I know a lot of people who won't purchase anything that doesn't have a.com extension, but there are many extensions available, including.net,.info,.org,.biz, and so on. There are no restrictions on those extensions, so you can use a.org even if you aren't an organization. I like to stick with the top 3 -.com,.net, and.org. The best one is.com.

The pricing of a domain for sale is variable and completely up to the seller. Typically the.coms have a higher value, but any website that has an easy to read domain name, with a major extension can get traffic, and therefore have value.

So now that you have a domain name registered, it's time to make some money on it! Put it up for auction on a site like eBay.com. I looked today and there were 71 pages of domain names for sale. Another option would be a specialty auction site like sedo.com which bills itself as the World's Largest Domain Marketplace. Put your Domains up for sale and keep track of what sells and how much it sells for. You will find that there are some keyword modifiers that you can add to most any topic that makes it worth a lot more.

There are 4 main factors that you should consider when choosing a domain name.

2. Branding
3. Dashes

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization (SEO) is all about getting traffic from the search engines, such as Google, and Yahoo/Bing. Google accounts for approximately 66% of the search engine traffic so it's best to focus on them.

Your url is part of your SEO strategy. If you have relevant keywords in your url, it can give you a boost in the search engine results when people type in keywords related to your website.

For example, if I had a site about china travel tips and the url for that website was chinatraveltips.com, I could get an extra boost from Google when someone types in that keyword phrase.

In fact, if you have an exact match domain name, most people agree that you get an even higher boost for that keyword phrase. For example, if your website was keywordphrase.com that would be an exact match domain name and you would get a boost in the search engine rankings when someone types that exact phrase in.

However, Google is turning down the impact that having a keyword related domain name has on search engine results. How much they're turning it down, we don't know yet. But, it's pretty clear that it won't have the same effect that it used to have.

Branding

Branding is just using a unique word, phrase or design to distinguish your products, service or company.

All of the major corporations are well-known brand names - Apple, Nike, Sony.

A unique name can help you stand out from the competition and the same goes for domain names. Do you think that Nike would've had the same success if they just went with tennisshoes.com? Obviously, that's a little different since they didn't start as an internet company, but the principle is the same.

If you're creating a business online and you want to stand out from the competition, you should consider a unique url. If you use a brand name as your url, you can stand out in your market and people will remember your name over all the other domain names made up of keyword phrases.

If you're creating small niche websites that target specific keywords, you might want to avoid brand names and try to get keyword rich domain names. However, with the changes in Google's position, the benefit from keyword domains most likely won't have the same impact as they did before.

Dashes

A lot of people wonder if they should include dashes in their url. Part of that decision is personal preference and part is based on objective factors.

I'm not a big fan of dashes in domains. If we're talking about how to choose a url, you have to consider the real world too.

Domain names with dashes can be hard to remember, especially if you communicate the domain to someone in person. If they forget, then you're going to be sending traffic to the non-dash version of your site.

For example, if your website is keyword-phrase.com and you tell your friend to visit your website at keyword dash phrase dot com and they forget the dash, you are now sending people to what I can only assume is your competition - keywordphrase.com - otherwise you would've just purchased the domain without the dash.

I imagine a url with a dash would run into those types of problems frequently.

From an SEO perspective, Google and the other search engines can identify keywords without a dash, so it's not necessary to include a dash in your url.

In fact, if you look at the search results for any given query, you won't see a lot of website names with dashes ranking in the top results. That could be because there aren't nearly as many domains with dashes as there are without, or it could be that Google doesn't rank them as well.

Unless, there was a really compelling reason to get a name with a dash, I would stick to one without.

The Top Level Domain (TLD) is the end of your url - .com, .net, .org.

The most common TLD, and the one most people default to is.com. In other words, if you tell someone your website is website.info and they try to visit your site later, but can't remember exactly what it was, they'll probably go to website.com before anything else.

Based on experiments that I've seen other people perform, .com, .net and .org are the best 3 TLD's to have, from an SEO perspective. That doesn't mean you can't rank well if you have a.info TLD, but it's gonna be a little harder.

You can also go to Google and run a search for anything you want. Take a look at how many of the results on the first page are.com compared to any other TLD. Again, it could be because there are more .com's than anything else, but the fact still remains that .com's are the most common and most popular TLD.

Can Anyone Buy A De Domain?

The first question anyone reading the title of this article might ask is why anyone outside of Germany itself would want to buy a de domain? The answer to that question is apparently a whole lot of people, as a look at the list of most expensive domain sales shows a decided interest in dot-de on the part of English speakers.

For example, the German word for the English verb "Shopping" is "Einkaufen." Guess the identity of the most expensive dot-de domain name ever sold? No, it wasn't "Einkaufen" that was purchased for 2.8 million dollars, it was "Shopping!" Next was the obviously German word, "Kredit," for 1.2 million dollars. But the third and fourth words, Casino($625,000) and Chat ($470,000), are just as obviously English. Casino in German is spelled with a "K," and "chat" is spelled "plaudern. Other European nations also employ the German TLD.

Apparently "de" is a favorite with certain creative site developers that appreciate a good "domain hack" in the Romance Languages like Spanish and French." Since in these languages "de" is used in a way similar to the way English speakers use "of," it allows the developers to combine the extension with the name and even associated files in the URL path. In an example provided by Wikipedia, "elforo.de" (theforum.of), becomes "elforo.de/wikipedia." Cool eh!

So the answer to the question posed by the title is apparently "yes," anyone can buy a de domain name. But read on, for there are restrictions!

First of all, if you live outside of Germany you must have a contact in Germany as the "administrative contact." This is not as onerous a restriction as it at first appears as the registrars will assign an administrative contact when the registrant is without one. Some registrars charge for the service. In the U.S., giant registrars like GoDaddy and its resellers automatically provide a proxy administrative contact for free.

A second restriction says that the maximum registration period is limited to one year.

A third restriction disallows the use of privacy. This restriction is not uncommon in the CC-TLD area; both dot-us and dot-ca, for example, will not allow privacy.

The fourth restriction has to do with name servers, "dns," and is certain to cause some confusion when encountered. It seems a dot-de domain must have no fewer than two "authoritative name servers." Each of the two name servers must be on a "separate class-C network"...already feeling a bit intimidated? Don't be! Your registrar will automatically assign the needed name servers; and if you request a change the support staff will know how to handle the switch.

Over fourteen million dot-de domains have been registered. This makes this the second most popular TLD. We can surmise that the majority have been registered by Germans, but it is apparent that others have bought up a share also as it is a particularly useful domain.

It is going to take a lot of research, and the shorter the name and more memorable and to-the-point the better. Many people say that long domain names are not a good idea, but I don't think the public actually jot domain names down on bits of paper any more, if they like your site they will probably Tweet it or email a link to their friends. I personally like dashes in domain names, it's a great way of getting the name you want, so you could get Used-Ball-Gowns.com easily. There is no mention anywhere in Google's Webmaster help section that dashes are a no-no. The only danger is that someone may forget to add the dashes and go through to a competitor's site.

What Is A Drop Registrar?

Have you ever closely monitored an expiring domain name with view to registering it as soon as it became available again only to be pipped at the post by another party? You may have fallen victim to a drop registrar.

"Fallen victim" is probably too strong a term - in fact, it's incorrect as drop registrars are pursuing a legitimate practice.

What a drop registrar does is register expired domain names as soon as they "drop" - meaning when they are deleted from the domain name registry and as such, become available again. The activity is also known as dropcatching.

The attempt to register the domain name is usually carried out in conjunction with a back order service - meaning that someone else; or quite possible multiple parties, have put in a request to grab the domain as soon as it became available again.

If there are multiple parties involved and assuming the registrar or back order service grabs the deleted domain, the name will then usually go to the highest bidder in an auction.

For the average person wanting to register a freshly-deleted domain of any value; it's quite a feat. While it's relatively easy to figure out the day the domain will become available again, the exact time of the day is arbitrary. They are up against automated tools that transmit up to 250 registration requests per second. Drop registrars are capable of issuing even higher levels of requests; but the 250 was a limit set by ICANN in 2001 to prevent abuse.

But the 250 figure only applies to a single entity. If multiple domain name backorder services are trying to grab the domain, an individual's chances of being successful through manual monitoring are very slim - in fact, virtually non-existent.

This can be a particularly stressful situation if the domain in question that has expired used to be registered to the person attempting to dropcatch it after having lost control through not renewing registration.

While domain name expiry processes do give certain grace periods along with multiple reminders at set intervals; if the contact record for the name is out of date, the registrant may never see these reminders.

This is why it's very important for domain registrants keep their details up to date and renew their domain name registration as soon as the first renewal reminder notice comes in - putting it off thinking it's a task that will remembered sometimes leads to grief.

Often people may see the first notice, but not the subsequent ones if they wind up in a junk mail folder or through some other mishap. The safest practice may be to set up a reminder for registration renewals; which can be easily done through applications such as Microsoft Outlook.

#1 Choosing A Domain Name

Your domain name is your on-line address. Your full address will be http//www.your domainnamehere.com or.org or.edu or some other extension.

You choose your domain name. In many cases, it'll be the first business decision you'll make so weigh the choice of domain name carefully. A good domain works for you. A bad one can doom your on-line venture the day you register it.

Some dos and don'ts about selection.

1. First, it costs a few bucks to register a domain name.

Your domain and information about ownership of that domain will be dutifully registered. Your ownership information will appear in a directory called Whois, an index of domain names that is public information. Anybody can find out who or what business entity owns a given domain.

Consider this when you enter personal information while filling out your registration. You may want to use a PO box instead of your street address or register the name in your company name rather than your personal name.

In any case, it costs a few bucks to register a domain name and the name has to be re-reregistered annually.

Some web hosts register your name free for the first year and send reminders that your domain is up for re-registration so pay the fee. Either way, (1) the few bucks it costs to register a domain makes the web available to any one with a couple of dollars and (2) don't forget to re-register your domain name each year. It's possible (easy) for domain hounds to snag a domain that has expired and take over your client base simply because you forgot to re-register. So, re-register.

2. All the good domain names have been taken.

If you mean names like lawyers.com, cars.com and firstaidsupplies.com, yes, someone owns the rights to those domains - domains that was probably registered 15 years ago before most businesses even knew what a domain was.

A lot of site owners have turned to made up words for domains. Examples? ning.com, zoho.com and yuuguu.com. They're catchy, though, and that makes them easy to remember.

If you're opening an on-line business (that's why you're reading this) use your imagination. Your name should be keyword dense, even if it's long. Your name should tell people and search engine bots something about your websites so if "amazing chocolate delights.com" is taken try "really amazing chocolate delights.com" or "incrediblechocolatedelights.com." Keep trying until you find a domain name that says something about your business.

If you're service provider - a local insurance agency or certified financial planner, choosing a name is simpler. Use your name and title: "DrJamesMillerMD.com," "PeterHughsCFA.com" and so on. This is how people in your service will know you - Dr. James Miller or Peter Hughs. These are good, solid domain names - especially for businesses and individuals seeking local business using localized search.

3. Skip the punctuation.

You're determined to have "amazingchocoloatedelights.com" as your domain name but it's taken. So, clever you, try "amazing-chocolate-delights.com" with hyphens in between each word in the domain name. Don't do it.

Search engine users often forget these punctuation symbols and you end up sending visitors to amazingchocolcatedelights.com (without the hyphens) and losing a sale. Instead, come up with a domain name that's easy to remember and doesn't use any punctuation.

4. Choose the right extension.

You can be a.com, where com stands for company or commercial (depending on who you listen to). You can be a.org - usually indicating a not-for-profit or an advocacy group, though more and more professional service providers are using the.org extension.

If you teach something, or sell materials to institutes of higher learning, go with a .edu extension - indicating an education or educational site. This is especially important for sites that provide continuing education units (CEUs) for professionals that require on-going education and training.

For example, private detectives in some states must accumulate a certain number of CEUs each year to keep their licenses active. So, a web site that offers on-line courses (CEUs) for private detectives would be better off with an edu extension to clarify exactly what the site is about - education, as in "privatedetectiveeducation.edu." Now that's a domain name that's keyword rich.

5. Consider registering similar domain names.

If you come up with a really good domain name, some people may try to piggyback on your cool domain name by registering similar domain names. You can protect yourself from this type of activity by registering similar sounding domain names and simply parking them on your server. No charge.

6. Don't be cute.

Amazon.com is a well recognized name. Interesting that the name says nothing about what Amazon is or does but it sure is easy to remember.

Check it out. Domain goofs register misspelled variations of Amazon to collect visitors who weren't... ummm... paying attention. So they register Amozon, Amozan and variations hoping to get search engine users who enter misspelled domain names.

You're wasting your time and your money. Visitors will bounce once they realize they aren't on Amazon and you don't build a whole lot of trust and good will by taking advantage of the mistakes of search engine users.

7. Take your time.

Your domain name is that important.

VERY IMPORTANT: The first thing you need to know is perhaps the most important of all. If you find a domain name that you wish to register and it's available, register it IMMEDIATELY. There are two important reasons for this. First, domain names disappear quickly, so someone else could get it quicker than you might think. Second, some search tools that tell you whether the domain name is available or not also alert others to your search. If you don't register right away, the domain you want could become unavailable in as little as a couple hours.

Probably the first thing you want to do is create a list of domain names you would like to check for availability. In most cases, the shorter and easier to remember and type, the better it is. Think about how you would give out your domain name over the phone. If that would be complicated, you may need a better domain name. Your name or company name would probably be preferred, but that's not always the best choice.

For example, if you were Joe's Plumbing in Toledo, OH and specialized in emergency service, not only is joesplumbing.com not likely to be available, toledoemergencyplumbing.com would be better even though it's longer. Once these primary considerations for your domain name are addressed, and you have your list of domain names to register, it's time to search to see if they are available. There are several sources for registering domain names, but GoDaddy is probably the best known.

With all your domain names and variations selected, and with the.com,.net, and.org for each, your registration will be like checking out of any online store. If you're using GoDaddy, they will suggest a lot of extras you probably don't need. I recommend evaluating these to make your decision, and you'll likely decline most of them.

Most registrants also offer hosting, but personally, I advise using different companies for each. For online merchants, the solution is simple, but can be very expensive - to register domain names that cover all the possible incorrect spellings. That's fine if you have deep pockets and a short name, but for most online merchants, while registering the most common misspellings may be possible; to cover them all simply isn't viable.

At the minimum, if you know of a certain common typo of your domain name; it's wise to register that and just redirect the traffic accessing that domain to your web site.

Prevention is certainly better than cure. In a case of typosquatting, trademark holders need to file a complaint with under the the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP), which isn't cheap and can be very time consuming. If you haven't trademarked your site's name; then a favorable outcome is less certain.

While you can't stop people making spelling mistakes; you can educate your own users, subscribers and customers. Teach them check the address they've entered into a browser before logging into what they believe to be the authentic site, or to use trusted links. This type of information can be relayed through newsletters and transactional emails such as order receipts.

A domain name is a textual name that defines a numeric location of a computer on the Internet. Instead of referring to a domain with some cryptic number, you just type in an easy-to-remember textual name instead.

Levels of Domains

A domain name is divided up into portions or sections - and confusingly, these sections are called domains. (Nerds, gotta love 'em). The portions of the domain name are separated by dots. Here are examples of 2 typical names with their domains identified:

Sometimes you will hear about 'top-level domains', sometimes called TLD's. The TLD (or sometimes referred to as the 'parent' domain) is merely the .com, .net, or .org portion of the domain name. While .com, .net, and .org are the most common top-level domain, there are many others, like .biz and .info. Non-US top-level domains may be .au (Australia), .ca (Canada), or.de (Germany).

Mid-level domains are the rest of the name. For the example above, the word Yahoo in the yahoo.com name is the mid level domain. In the japantimes.co.jp domain name, there are two mid-level domains - the smaller mid-level domain is 'japantimes' and the larger mid-level portion is the 'co'. The relative importance of each of the segments increases as you move to the right.

Who Controls All Of This?

These names are like street addresses on the Internet, so by design, only one entity can own a domain name. The names are controlled by an organization called ICANN, which stands for the catchy title of 'Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers'. (No doubt their Christmas party is a blast). This group keeps track of everyone's ownership of registered names, so when you buy a one, no one else can use it. They set up contracts with retail domain registries like Namecheap who actually sell you the domain name and provide you with a web site to manage it.

Should You Buy The '.Com' Version Of Your Site If It's For Sale?

If you own a website but don't own the .com domain and it's for sale, what should you do? Should you buy it even if it's at an inflated price or should you just let it go?

This is a common problem that people have and it's a legitimate question that needs to be addressed. The beautiful thing about this question is there are so many great points to both sides of the argument. Let's go ahead and get into the details of this question.

First, it's always a good idea to get the .com domain for any website. A .com domain is the most popular in the world and it's basically what's expected today for websites. I mean, if you were to guess a website based on a brand name, you'll always start with a .com in the url.

So if the .com domain is for sale and it's at a fair price, grab it as soon as you can. But what happens if the price is really inflated. What should you do?

Well, on one hand, you should buy the .com domain at any price based on the reasons I've already given above. Plus, even if you just use the domain for re-directing purposes, you'll still be in great shape.

Now before you buy the .com domain, do as much research as you can to see how much traffic that domain already gets. If it gets a lot of traffic already, than you need to evaluate how much you'll be willing to pay for it. If it doesn't get a lot of traffic, factor that into your negotiations.

Tip: Do your best not to let the selling party know you own the same domain name without the .com extension. If they know you have the same domain name, the price will most likely go up.

On the other hand, you don't necessarily need the .com domain to have a successful website. If you do proper search engine optimization for your site, you can easily rank better than your competitor. Plus, unless you are branding yourself or branding your business with that specific keyword in the domain, it won't really matter.

The reality is the .com is not the holy grail of domain names. There is enough evidence out there where.net and.org websites far outperform their.com counterparts.

Bottom line is do what's best for your business.

Tip: If you decide you want to buy the .com domain for sale, it's advised that you get a professional broker to negotiate or buy on your behalf. They know the game better than you do and can probably negotiate a deal that's far, far less than what's being originally offered.

What is a domain name?

The domain name is the name for your website. It is the Internet equivalent of your mail or postal address.

Choosing a good domain name is one of the first items on the agenda when setting up your new website. Take great care with it. You cannot change it at any time in the future without a completely fresh start.

It should be easy to remember and it should include your main targeted keywords.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) or other types of website promotion.

You must decide at an early stage if the main thrust for promotion will be with SEO or another type of marketing.

If you hope to attract new clients to your website by being found on the search engines such as Google, the domain name should concentrate on the keywords that indicate the products or services you offer: Your name or brand name will be meaningless to people who have never heard of you. If you plan to promote your website mainly by advertising or networking there would be merit in having your brand name included.

There is a balance to be struck between the inclusion of your targeted keywords and ease of recall.

The question of including locality should be carefully considered. Targeting a large metropolis will make it difficult to achieve top positioning on the search engine results pages (SERPs). 'london-italian-restaurant' may seem attractive but the competition is high (HomePage PageRank keyword difficulty - HPR-KD 5.6) and top positioning on the SERPs is unlikely. Competition will also depend on the nature of the service or products at you are targeting. The competition for a dietician's website is likely to be less than for an Italian restaurant and a town with 200,000 people may be in range for top positioning whereas a small borough might be more appropriate for the Italian restaurant.

Three words, perhaps including your locality, are a reasonable maximum and aim for no more than 20 characters. The maximum permitted number of characters is 63. Letters, numbers and hyphens are permitted.

There is debate as to whether there should be hyphens between the words - 'london-tour-guides' or 'londontourguides'. In favour of the former is that it is easier for the search engines to index the keywords whereas in favour of the latter is that it is easier for clients to remember. The search engines provide no guidance and this is not an area that lends itself to research.

Domain Extensions.

The extension indicates the country of origin of the site, the nature of the site or both. Although '.com' suggests a commercial site it has become the most popular and often the first choice for many sites even if they are not commercial. Examples of other domain extensions indicating function are '.org' - non-commercial organisation '.gov' - government websites and '.edu' educational websites.

Every country has its own extension. Examples include '.co.uk' - for the UK, '.de' for Germany and '.jp' for Japan. Most extensions are available to all websites. Some extensions, however, are reserved for specific organisations. Examples are '.nhs.uk' and '.ac.uk'.

Two websites cannot have identical domain names. They can have similar names but with different extensions such as 'mywebsite.com' and 'mywebsite.org'.

Domain name registration.

When you register the domain, you are inserting an entry into the global directory of all the websites on the Internet.

At the time of registration, there is an option to show or hide your details. It is better to show them or potential clients might have concerns that you have something to hide. Make sure your information is kept up to date or you could lose control of your domain.

There is an annual fee for domain name retention. If you fall behind with the payment, the cost of renewal increases significantly. You should renew your registration with the 'registrar' company you used first time round. There are some seemingly official looking companies who may contact you early offering to renew the registration for you at a discounted rate. It is worth double checking their fees as they are usually the more expensive option.

Buying an old domain name.

You may find that the domain name you would like is owned by someone else. It may be in use currently on the web or possibly registered but not in use. Some companies have a facility to negotiate purchase of owned domain names on your behalf. For example, if you want a new website for a travel agency to South America - Amazon.com might be desirable, although this one might prove to be rather expensive.

There are some agencies that actively market currently unused domains. There is an incorrect belief that the age of a domain name has a major influence on positioning on SERPs. Whilst it is true that there is a tendency for older domains to have higher positioning there are confounding factors relating to backlinks. A new website has no links and a HomePage PageRank (HPR) of 0. If a website has good content, it will accumulate links and the HPR will increase. The HPR is the top factor in the Google algorithm. Older domains only rise up the SERPS when they have accumulated links. An old domain with no links will fare no better than a new website.

For those considering purchasing a 'pre-owned' domain name I have the following concerns.

1. The search engines will become aware of the change in ownership. They may discard links from their index made before that change. I know of website owners who purchased a domain name with an HPR4 only to find that within a few months it had fallen to 0.

2. It is possible that the previous owner indulged in unethical practice. You may inherit the repercussions.

New domain names

It is worth spending time researching your options and inventing a new name that will fulfil most of your ambitions. There are often gems to be found. A few months ago, I came across a new available '.com' that was too tempting for me to resist - '1onGoogle'. However, with an HPR-KD of 6.4 for '1 on Google', I know that my website will not hit the top SERP for such a competitive keyword even with the keyword in the domain name.

The main advantage of having your keyword in the domain name is that there is a reasonable chance that your keywords, such as 'health', '1onGoogle' or 'web design' will be included in the anchor text of links to your website. This has positive SEO implications.

It must be said that inclusion of keywords in domain names for SEO purposes has never been a major ranking factor. According to Matt Cutts, who regularly speaks on behalf of Google, its value has been further diminished in 2011. It can be argued that websites such as Google, Amazon and Facebook have done well with brand names as their domain names. These, however, are the exceptions to the rule that most of us must work with.

Finally, choose a domain name that you will feel comfortable with and that you will enjoy. It is like choosing the name for your baby. Let us hope that your website will be successful and you will be happy with your choice.

Brand real estate is about to create a whole new earth in our clouds. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) are the coordinators of unique web addresses, ensuring that computers can find one another across the world, and they have just approved something called Top-Level Domains.

Pretty soon well known domain names like .net, .com, .org ext will expand creatively, exposing a new platform where 'big corporate companies and industries' will be able to purchase land online, expressing personalised web addresses and opening back up many more opportunities to get your dream domain.

For instance;

A company such as 'Ford' would normally have "ford.com" BUT if they wished to, they could apply for "cars.FORD". You could also apply for generic extensions such as.CARS,.BANK,.MUSIC or.HAIR, for companies that come under a certain area such as existing extensions like.travel. Enabling such a proposal will influence people to select their own land in the online cloud, where their URLS are more than appropriate for their market. The change will create memorable, short names revolutionising the web and trade standards where companies may feel they need to fight for their brand names.

The proposition will open big business potential. People who buy certain domain extension such as.music could (perhaps) gain millions of pounds worth of revenue from bands, labels and music related companies who wish to end their URL with.music (as an example).

At present, a few companies have expressed their interest to ICANN with the majority wanting to take their business brand for a Top Level Domain, with the minority applying for generic terms.

Although ICANN state that they are not selling new names, the cost to apply for a new .'BLANK' will be around £115,000, or $185,000 with a further $25,000 maintenance fee. Inevitably such prices aren't helping the situation, with possibilities only being opened for the big shots.

A global campaign is about to commence to inform the world about the future of internet naming in preparation for application acceptances from the beginning of next year, January 12th to be exact.

Technical glitches

Although the idea is creative and will allow businesses and whoever else to build a personal URL, they aren't going to help you with the Search Engine Gang (eg; Google), who do not prioritise Top Level Domain names over others. What could also cause confusion is how companies will express their brand through extended web addresses. Companies may split their brand across an URL which could cause confusion to their market and the internet. The move may increase the chance that businesses may take up all the different options of addresses to hold on to their branding. EG;.twitter, twit.ter, twit.er and so on. Big companies will want to make sure that their market are coming directly to their brand, and not being mislead to another site--potentially leading to the slight decrease in affiliate sites. Also, Lawyers should prepare themselves with the possibility that infringement cases will increase when the approvals start popping up all over the internet.

This is of course good news for anyone who has tried to purchase their business domain name recently and found their name already taken by another company, or worse still an unused link / holding page! If you're planning on running a successful online business, you should be able to invest the $10 and get a proper domain name. You should be buying a domain name that has to do with your product or service you are offering.

You should think about registering a domain name before you actually go about doing. There's a certain level of planning that has to be done before the registration process. You need to come up with a catchy name that people will remember and one that is also search engine friendly. After all, your domain name is an extension of the business you're running and will be the deciding factor on whether people click your link or not. There are many types of domain extensions available such as.com.net.org etc. When in doubt make sure to choose the.com extension. This is the most common one and probably the most search engine friendly extension that exists today.

Make sure you're using a reputable registration service. I highly recommend you use GoDaddy. If you decide not to register your domain with GoDaddy, to make sure you do some research into the company before you register your website. Some scam sites will even steal your domain and try to sell it to you for a much higher price then you would've paid if you went through a reputable dealer. There are many scam companies out there that will take your money and run. Don't fall into this trap!

Make sure that the company has a good review online as well as e-mail and telephone support. These are clues that you're dealing with a reputable company. Also look for companies that look for accreditation such as ICANN. Reputable companies will seek these out because it boosts their image which means more business for them.

You should try to get keywords into your domain name. For example if you're selling cell phones than you'd want to put the keyword cell phones into your domain. Some people go crazy with this and make huge long domain names. They do this mainly because they want to get as many keywords as possible in their domain. You not want to do this because it's hard to remember and Google is likely to penalize domains that do this as they update their algorithms.

Try to choose a domain name that is as short as possible but preferably tells what your company is all about. If you do this successfully you will have laser targeted traffic coming to your website.
When you're registering a new domain, make sure not to use anyone else's trademark. You don't want to have any legal liability if you use the word Microsoft in your domain name for example. Keep it unique and keep it generic. Companies have been known to sue business owners that infringe on their copyrights and trademarks.

Another thing I see many website owners use hyphens in their domain name. Do not do this because it's extremely hard for customers to remember the hyphen. People may remember your website name I forgot that you had a hyphen within the domain. Your promotion might help another business make some sales! To be on the safe side just don't do it.

If you have the money, make sure you buy as many extensions as possible. You don't want any other company trying to piggyback off your success.

So to summarize, make sure you choose a reputable company to register your domain with, and choose a unique name that is easy to remember. Registering a domain will make you look more professional and give you more credibility in the industry. A Website Name Is Only A Name, Or Is It?

Deciding upon a name for your website is almost like naming your child; once it's named, that's it and you can't change it, well, you could but it will cost you. Your website name represents you and your company; it should be meaningful and hopefully something that someone can easily remember. What is involved and why is a good name so important?

Time - Take time to create names. Use key words and try to leave out words such as best, greatest or superior because they don't actually give any information. The name should reflect the product. If you look at any of the major products on the market today, you will find that the website name is actually the name of the product. For example, SC Johnson's cleaning product Scrubbing Bubbles has its own website called scrubbingbubbles.com. It is simple, easy to remember and to the point.

Individualize - How one comes up with names will vary on the person and how they work as an individual. A quick and easy (yes, I said easy) is to brainstorm and just list whatever comes to mind. First think about what you are offering and everything that it can do. Then start writing and even if it sounds funny or stupid to you, write it down. If you want a different point of view, ask someone else to brainstorm for you or with you. When you are done, you will have a number of words and/or phrases that you can use to begin creating a name.

Mix it Up - Another way to create a name is by slightly altering the name but keeping it easy to remember otherwise someone may type it incorrectly and ends up at your competitor's website. This change could be a play on words or a particular word is spelled slightly different or you use a numeric digit instead of writing the number out. If the product or selling is fun, then try and make the website name fun like your cleaning company could have a name like wedontmessaround.com. And you certainly wouldn't want your law office to have a name like defendersRus.com because what you do is of a serious nature so the website name should be professional and clean.

Research - If you are still having a hard time, check out your competitors names. There may be one that attracts your attention and perhaps it will set your mind in motion. Maybe there is a key feature about your product that simply stands out and you could use that in the name. Check out the Internet registries and see what they have available for sale. You could even search the Internet with several of your keywords that have been used in your articles and see what comes up.

If you have a website name that you just have to use and is already taken, try changing the extension. Instead of using ".com' try ".net" or ".org". With some imagination and ingenuity, you will be able to decide on the perfect name for your website.

Your selection of name will influence your internet traffic tremendously. If you want people to find you, your choice of URL is very important. If you alter your site address, you might lose the entire identity of your blog. You might need to rebuild your blog from scratch... You'll typically lose your regular visitors, your search engine rankings, etc.. Choose your domain name extremely carefully and stick to it! When choosing your website address, try to abide by the following tips:

Endeavour to get a domain name that strongly mirrors that which your website will be about. It should reflect your most important search term. Visitors, not to mention search engines, will greatly reward you for this. It immediately lets visitors know what your site is about. Search engines usually ranks a site much higher for the specific keyword, if the key term is also in your website address.
Keep the years to come in mind. You should not choose a website name that's too specific. To illustrate, if you originally plan on blogging about stoves, you should not necessarily choose to include the word "stoves" in your website name. If you expand later and begin blogging about dishwashers, your website address may not fit anymore. Rather go for a broader term, such as including the word "kitchens" in your website name.
Your domain name furthermore ought to be unforgettable; something people would easily manage to recall. It needs to be impressionable but it should not be too long - keep it short.
Avoid names which are trademarked.
If the name you want to get isn't available, you could also choose to hyphenate the name. The downside of this is that it's relatively easy to forget the hyphens when typing in the name. Also, if your site is targeted at local people, it would be better to choose a country-specific TLD. If it focuses on international people, .com would be better.
Consider getting several extensions, in addition to various spellings, of your domain name. This would ensure that no-one can replicate your domain name and aim to "borrow" your visitors. You can set up redirects on each of these so that if visitors go to one of the several other domains that you own, it would redirect them to your main website.

Choosing a really good domain name is obviously very important. It's not a quick decision to make - take your time in choosing the perfect name for your site. Always keep your potential visitors, as well as the search engines, in mind and your website will be on the right path to success!

DNS Load Balancing

Load balancing is a computer technology for distributing information requests across multiple resources. For example, multiple connections to a website or host record may be serviced by distribution of the requests to multiple servers containing the same web content, but located at different IP addresses. Each time a request is made for connection to the domain name, the authoritative name server for the domain sends all IP addresses associated with the name back to the client or requester.

Management is accomplished in what is called a "round robin" fashion. This means that the authoritative name server changes the order of the IP contained in the response to the client, randomizing the order or placing the addresses into a sequential order. A client normally connects to the first address on the list, and so by reorganizing the list, the server ensures that requests for access to the domain name are directed to multiple end servers. In this scheme, IP addresses are handed out in sequential order, meaning that the first client request gets the first IP record, the second request the second record, and so on throughout the list. This is a simple method to implement, but in some cases it is deficient for various reasons. Clients do manage connections by shifting from an attempted connection with a non-responsive resource to the next available resource so that generally speaking a connection will ultimately succeed.

The operation of DNS load balancing is fairly simple in practice. Generally there will be several so-called "front end servers," each of which has its own IP address. All of the servers will then connect physically through a network to the primary intended resource on the "backend." The list of IP addresses is that list which is delivered to Internet clients making a request for access. The IP address is, of course, the location on the Internet where the resource is physically located and accessible. The list is randomized or placed into sequential order, and each client will attempt to form a connection with the first IP address on the list. If that connection fails, the client will attempt to connect to the next IP address, and then the next, and so on.

There are various limitations to DNS load balancing which may prevent its use in some cases. DNS load balancing is not the only method of load balancing. Other methods include direct routing, involving changing the MAC address of the incoming data packet, and network address translation (NAT) load balancing, involving translation of requests through a load balancer. Limitations to DNS load balancing include most importantly that it is not possible through this method to ensure even distribution across all receiving servers.

DNS management tools can also be used in the load balancing process. DNS management tools allow for monitoring of IP address availability to ensure ready connectivity. There are also DNS management tools designed to identify MAC addresses of devices by IP address. These allow for ongoing hardware maintenance, which is very useful in larger networks.

Many times I found someone asking me, how to push domain at Godaddy from their account to another Godaddy account.

So, here this I will share to you the steps to push domain from your Godaddy account to another Godaddy account :

Ask the personal informations like Name, Address, Phone and Email (this is the email that they used to register for the first time at Godaddy) to the person who want to domain push for.
Login to your Godaddy account.
Click for the "my domain" button.
Check for domain that you want to push to another Godaddy account.
Click for "account change" and click next button.
Fill the form with the personal informations that you get from the first steps.
Click Next button and finished with click OK button.
Godaddy will sent you and the person who you push for an email.
The person receiving the domain will receive an email with codes that they need to enter into their account, in the 'Accept Account Change' section.
Then the person that receiving the domain, should go through the whole Checkout process just as if they're registering a new domain - they even need to enter payment information, even though the cost is listed as $0.00 !.
The tips and trick to follow the checkout process without enter the payment informations is select the 'pay by check' payment options.
Then the domain was pushed.
